Cultivation of millet: Governments are constantly trying to promote coarse grains, such as millet and sorghum, in the country. As an important step in this direction, the Rajasthan Agriculture Department has distributed free seed minikits to farmers during the financial year 2024-25. Under this initiative, 7 lakh 90 thousand millet and 89 thousand sorghum seed minikits have been provided to the farmers in the state. This will not only increase the cultivation of coarse grains. But the income of farmers will also improve.
The cultivation of coarse grains is especially beneficial in areas where there is less irrigation and less fertile land available. These grains are considered to be a solution to important issues like malnutrition, health problems and climate change. The United Nations has declared 2023 as the International Year of Nutritious Cereals, in which it has been proposed to promote 8 coarse grains including millet, sorghum, kodo.
Beneficial for health
Coarse grains include millets, jowar, ragi and kodo, which are rich in nutrients. These grains are rich in protein, minerals and medicinal properties, which help prevent serious diseases like malnutrition, obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Scientists believe that the consumption of these grains is essential for a healthy and balanced diet.
